"The Decepticons are a malevolent race of robot warriors, brutal and merciless. The Decepticons are driven by a single undeviating goal: total domination of the universe. In the war that raged between the Decepticons and Autobots for millions of years, their home planet of Cybertron was drained of its once rich sources of energy. In hopes of finding new reserves for making Energon, their basic fuel, the Decepticons followed the Autobots to Earth. Under the leadership of the ruthless Megatron, they continued their efforts to destroy the remaining Autobot forces. They attacked throughout the Earth and in space, using their underwater Decepticon headquarters as their staging base and bunker. But, by the year 2000, the Decepticons had proven to be the losers of the last Great War. In an attempt to bolster the Decepticons' strength, the evil planet gobbling world, Unicron, reformed Megatron into a new robot named Galvatron to lead the Decepticons in a new era. Now, in 2006, the Decepticons have retreated to a burned out hulk of a planet called Chaar, a world of ash and ruin. Galvatron and his Decepticon lieutenants, the sleek and awesome Cyclonus, and the mighty Scourge, the master of the dreaded Sweeps, strike fear throughout the universe. Their ultimate goal: to reconquer Cybertron and destroy the Autobots."
―Narrator in the Secret Files of Teletraan II

The Decepticons are a group of Cybertronians whose original goal was to get rid of the infamous Caste System on Cybertron and return to the empire-building, space-faring ways of their ancestors. The name "Decepticon" came from prewar propaganda by the Autobot High Council, labeling them liars and thieves. They took the title as something honorable instead; in their minds and Megatron's words, "if speaking the truth [was] deception, then [they were] gladly guilty."

In the Great War and long after, they were opposed by the Autobots. Occasionally both would put aside their differences for mutual threats only to resume fighting later.

History

Beginnings

When the original Thirteen Primes helped their creator Primus defeat his evil twin brother and rival Unicron, conflicts fueled by discord slowly spread among their ranks as time went on after the Chaos-Bringer's defeat. Tensions ultimately reached a breaking point during the War of the Primes when Megatronus Prime and his brethren got into a fight that resulted in the death of Megatronus' lover and fellow Prime Solus Prime. When she was hit with a blast from her creation and one of the ancient artifacts of the Primes, called the Requiem Blaster, an action that resulted in the creation of the Well of Allsparks from Solus' lifeless body. Megatronus earning the titles of "The Fallen" and the "First Decepticon," something that would live on in Cybertronian history even after the remaining Primes banished him to a different dimension.

Transformers: Prime

The Decepticons were a Kaonian movement started by a miner named Megatron to bring forth a new world order on Cybertron with him as their leader. The majority of the Decepticons were originally low-ranking members of society, such as miners and gladiators, but some were members of higher castes craving more power, such as Ratbat. They held goals similar to the Iaconian movement of the Autobots but differed on how to obtain them. When Megatron was ultimately denied the Matrix of Leadership and rank of Prime, he ordered his followers to fight and take over Cybertron by force. During the war, their noble ideals quickly became corrupted, and they became almost completely amoral, willing to seize power by any means available. This led them to them using Dark Energon, causing the Core of Cybertron to shut down. Like their enemies, the Decepticons took to the stars continuing their war across the galaxy.

After Bumblebee killed Megatron, the Decepticons were left in complete disarray. Right after the final defeat of a resurfaced Unicron, Megatron disbanded the Decepticons' cause and exiled himself, retreating to parts unknown. Starscream attempted to rebuild the Decepticon cause though he was quickly stopped when confronted by the three Predacons.

Steeljaw's Pack

The symbol Steeljaw used for his pack.

Despite their breakup by the reformed Megatron, some Decepticons chose to continue the villainous cause, notably Steeljaw, who sought to reunite the Decepticons. Several Decepticons were also imprisoned aboard the Alchemor and escaped after Megatronus caused it to crashland on Earth. The Decepticons of postwar Cybertron seem to be more or less represented by criminals and other Cybertronian lowlifes rather than former warriors of the original faction.

It eventually turned out that the Autobot High Council originally set up for the period after the war had been usurped by a group of Decepticons led by Cyclonus. Still, they were ultimately defeated when Cyberwarp rebelled and allowed them to be taken into custody by the Bee Team.

Recruitment History

The earliest Decepticon members were gladiators such as Blackout, Lugnut, Drixco and Barricade. Shockwave was a scientist who joined the Decepticons and served as Megatron's chief scientist and one of his many second-in-commands. Soundwave and his Mini-Con deployers Laserbeak, Ravage, Rumble and Frenzy were also among the first modern Decepticons. During the war Breakdown, Knock Out, Airachnid, Makeshift, Headstrong, Rampage, Tantrum and many others all joined the faction. Axer left Cybertron shortly after Orion Pax was said to be a Prime by the High Council but sort-of joined them when the Nemesis arrived at Junkion. For the war's early years, Starscream had close associations with the Decepticons but did not officially join them. He spent most of his time on the Trypticon Station or one of the Moon Bases with his army of loyal Seekers keeping an eye on the Dark Energon stored there. He did not fully commit to their ranks until Megatron led an attack on his neutral forces on the Trypticon Station to get the Dark Energon during the events of Transformers: War for Cybertron. Trypticon was also given life by Shockwave shortly after, and Starscream was later promoted to the position of second-in-command of all Decepticon forces. Ratbat and Contrail joined the Decepticons when the High Council nominated Orion Pax as the next Prime. The Combaticons and Constructicons were built before the War for Cybertron events. The Insecticons joined the Decepticons during Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, some time before Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. As mentioned above, the later Decepticons of the postwar era on Cybertron and ultimately in the universe appeared to be simply composed of common crooks and thugs rather than disciplined and well-trained warriors.

Trivia/Notes

  • The Decepticons show up in most Transformers media as the primary main antagonists. They also show up in live-action movies as the mains antagonists as well.
    • The Decepticons were led by Megatron. In most series, Megatron would die but also come back to life in a new body or his old body.
    • This is the first incarnation in which the faction is truly disbanded.
    • The Autobots are their true enemies.
    • This is the first incarnation of the faction that has generics make up the majority of their army. The main characters in this series mostly act as supervisors, officers, and/or commanders.
    • The Decepticons mostly speak English, but they can speak the Cybertronian language in their conversations.
    • The Decepticons from Robots In Disguise often have animal themes to either their Robot Modes or Alternate Modes. In contrast, the Decepticons seen in Prime mostly all had vehicle Alternate Modes and humanoid Robot Modes.
    • Many Decepticons firmly believe that Cybertronians are the greatest and most superior form of life throughout the galaxy. While they leave other mechanical-based races alone to develop as they will, this translates to the cleansing of organic worlds. Still, they have, however, no qualms about killing any other Cybertronian that stands in their way, especially if they are an Autobot or just neutral.
